The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) assessments measure how well individual students have met provincial expectations in the Ontario Curriculum.

We also look at aggregate results for Grand Erie’s students to better understand how to meet their educational needs. For more information on the EQAO and assessment practices, visit the EQAO website.

Students in Grades 1–8 receive three report cards during the school year: a progress report card in November, and provincial report cards in February and June.

Physical activity helps students thrive—and it’s fun. At Grand Erie, we cheer loudly when our students get involved in sports, athletics or any of the physical activities our schools support.

At the elementary level, students have many options to participate in gym classes and daily activities, as well as intramural or competitive sports. Our students also compete in the CAGE (Combined Athletics Grand Erie) Championships.

For elementary students, the Ontario Curriculum is designed to build a strong foundation—including literacy and numeracy skills—that will set them on the path to lifelong learning. 

The Ontario Curriculum outlines the knowledge and skills students need for success, with each grade or course building on what students have learned already and considering students’ developmental growth. 

The curriculum isn’t static: it changes from time to time to remain current, relevant, and developmentally appropriate – and to support the strengths, interests and needs of all students.

Math is fun! Our Family Math newsletter gives parents math activities to enjoy with your kids.

Math puzzles, games and similar challenges are a great way for families to understand math concepts and develop math skills together. 

Math in action
Our teachers have snapped students having fun while exploring math concepts in school. Parents, you can adapt many of these as activities at home.

Every Grand Erie elementary school offers the Core French program in Grades 4–8. Some schools also offer French Immersion programs in various grades.

We currently offer an Extended French program at the secondary level. All of our French programs share a common purpose: to develop a student’s oral communication (listening and speaking), reading and writing skills. 

The Grand Erie Math Achievement Action Plan (GEMAAP) supports math learning and math achievement for students in Grades 1–9.

From classroom teachers to senior staff and board trustees, we at Grand Erie are committed to supporting math learning. GEMAAP integrates high-impact instructional strategies – teaching methods that work – with the Ontario Math Curriculum, along with intensive professional development for educators and access to instructional coaches. As well, we’re focused on knowing how all aspects of math education can be relevant and responsive to each learner’s needs. 

We value all the languages that our students and their families speak. And we want multilingual language learners (MLLs) to have a positive, successful school experience.

Grand Erie is dedicated to providing culturally responsive services and programs for English language learning students. You can find out more about Ontario’s school system, Grand Erie programs and community services at your school’s Welcome Centre. The centres also assess new students and make recommendations for appropriate learning programs. 

When students aren’t able to be in a classroom, we support them with remote learning capabilities.

Programs and resources available to elementary students include the Elementary Remote Learning Program for Grades 1–8, the learning platform Brightspace, TVO Mathify online tutoring, and resources of the Ministry of Education’s Learn at Home program.

During the school year, Grand Erie school staff participate in several PA Days. 

These days provide learning opportunities for educators to develop skills to better support student success in our schools. On PA Days, students remain at home. 

Grand Erie provides a range of summer learning opportunities for students.

For some students, summer learning bridges the gap between school years. For others, it can give them a jumpstart on the year ahead. Our Camp SAIL program, for example, is a fun, supportive environment that develops literacy and numeracy skills.
