Your Voice at the Table: Student Trustee Election

Friday, Dec 19, 2025

The student trustee election is right around the corner, inviting passionate individuals to step up and make a difference in their school community.

This year, one student trustee will be elected from the northern area of Brant County/City of Brantford. The current student trustee representing the southern area of Haldimand and Norfolk, and the student trustee appointed by Indigenous students, will continue with a second term.

"As a student trustee, I've learned what it truly means to represent others. I stepped into this role to listen, speak up and ensure that student perspectives are present in decision-making," says Prabhsidak Singh, who currently represents the County of Brant/City of Brantford region. "This role isn't about having everything figured out. It is about being willing to learn and engage with purpose."

"To this year's applicants: remember that your voice has value. The role of student trustee will shape you as much as you shape it, and if you learn, lead and inspire, your work will leave a meaningful impact," Singh concludes.

Some responsibilities of student trustees include ongoing communication with students, and regular attendance at scheduled board meetings and events.

"Student trustees play a vital role at the board table," notes Regan Vankerrebroeck, Superintendent of Education. "Their leadership, insight and advocacy help shape decisions that impact learning environments across Grand Erie. We encourage students who are committed to making a positive difference to consider stepping forward for this important role."

If you're interested in applying to run for the position of student trustee, the first step is to apply in writing to your school principal by Friday, January 16, 2026. The successful applicant will then attend the Student Election meeting in February, with the term running from August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2027.

Service as a student trustee may be eligible for either a co-op credit or community service hours, with the approval of the student trustee’s principal and co-op teacher. Students who have questions about the process or the responsibilities entailed in the position are encouraged to ask their principal. The voice and advocacy of student trustees helps Grand Erie reach its strategic goals of supporting equitable, inclusive and responsive environments for every learner.
