Yashveer Kayal, a Grade 5 student at Agnes G. Hodge Public School, is counting a few recent honours stemming from his love of mathematics.

"I love math because it's like solving fun puzzles and using logic to find the right answer," Kayal shared. "It challenges my brain, helps me think in smart ways, and makes me feel proud when I figure things out."

In March, Kayal researched mathematician Alan Turing and designed a poster to submit as part of the University of Waterloo's Mathematician Mosaic project, an initiative to celebrate mathematicians’ rich and diverse contributions. Then in April, Kayal won a silver medal at the national Math Kangaroo Canada competition. To cap off his achievements, he placed first in the Math Caribou competition earlier this month, an online contest in math and STEM with more than ten thousand entries.

"Yashveer is an inspiration to all of us in terms of what we can achieve with perseverance and passion," said JoAnna Roberto, Director of Education. "Grand Erie's Math Achievement Action Plan is a collective commitment to support math learning for all students, and fostering a love of math is a big part of that."

The supportive environment at Agnes G. Hodge Public School has also been a big part of Kayal's success, nurturing the educational journeys of each student and finding ways that allow everyone to find and pursue a love of learning.

"Math inspires me to find solutions to a problem in different ways," Kayal added.
