A Message of Gratitude During Earth Week

Tuesday, Apr. 22, 2025

As we celebrate Earth Week, it's a chance to acknowledge the deep connections we share with the land, water and all living beings. To invite our schools to reflect on these connections, Teyhahonteh Miller, a respected Mohawk voice in our community, recently shared aspects of the Thanksgiving Address/Ohentoh Kariwahtekwen in a special Earth Week message. This message situates the importance of environmental stewardship, community connection and gratitude for creation.

Grand Erie is honoured to share this message widely, taking the opportunity not only to honour Mother Earth, but also to acknowledge our responsibility to protect and sustain the planet for future generations. As we reflect on these words, we encourage our school communities to engage in meaningful environmental actions, whether planting trees, cleaning up local parks and neighbourhoods or adopting sustainable practices in our daily lives.

Through the Thanksgiving Address/Ohentoh Kariwahtekwen, Teyhahonteh reminds us to appreciate the natural world around us. In a spirit of gratitude and respect, we invite you to consider the wisdom in this message, recognizing and honoring the gifts of Mother Earth and guiding us to work together for a planet where everyone can thrive.

Wishing you a wonderful Earth Week filled with gratitude and hope.
