The Grand Erie District School Board is home to thousands of students putting learning, well-being and belonging at the forefront of their education. Last year, students at Grandview Public School put their values in motion with a wellness venture to make personal care accessible. This year, their work continues.
It all began when Ms. Misiak, a grade 7 and 8 teacher, noticed a need in the community.
"She immediately applied for a grant to bring this idea to fruition" said Jennifer Boissonneault, Principal of Grandview Public School.

With support from the Desjardin Foundation, Grand Erie Public Health, and fellow teacher Sarah Elliot, Misiak and her students opened the Grizzlies' Wellness Tuck Shop, which was stocked with every item students need to feel confident and ready to learn. Respective donations of $3,000 and $400 made shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste available to students free of cost.
Working closely with public health nurse Jessica McClanahan, Misiak envisioned a judgement-free shopping experience where students in all grades receive what they need, while empowering older students to support their peers.

Students organized and displayed all of the products and created a punch-card system to discreetly track purchases. Along the way, they developed key skills in leadership, communication and organization that will serve them in high school and beyond.

The grant, which still serves Grandview students, will allow the Wellness Tuck Shop to continue into the 2026-27 school year. Staff are working to secure another grant through Grand Erie Public Health to replenish their stock and launch another shopping opportunity. This year, students will complete a survey to identify their most needed items.
The Wellness Tuck Shop recognizes a direct link between well-being, belonging and success at school.
"When students feel supported and ready for the day, they are better able to focus on learning and participate fully in their lives" explained Boissonneault.
